Community and Country Information:
Cerca-la-Source is a district in the Centre Department of Haiti with a population of approximately 83,000 residents. Typical homes in this area are constructed with wooden floors, mud or brick walls, and cement or tin roofs. The primary language spoken is Creole. Common health challenges in Cerca-la-Source include malaria, the flu, and diarrhea. Most adults in the community are unemployed, though some earn a living as animal herders, subsistence farmers, or plantation workers, with an average monthly income equivalent to $40. The community urgently needs more employment opportunities, schools, and access to educational materials.
Haiti occupies the western third of the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean. Its diverse geography includes mountains, valleys, lakes, seashores, and rivers, resulting in varied weather conditions. However, about two-thirds of Haiti's terrain is unsuitable for farming. Haiti is one of the most densely populated and poorest countries in the world. Many Haitians are subsistence farmers, cultivating small plots of land near their mud-and-thatch homes. While Creole is the most commonly spoken language, French is Haiti's official language. Catholicism is the predominant religion, but Voodoo, practiced by roughly half of the population, was officially recognized as a religion in 2003.
Center Information:
The Emmanuel Educational Center was founded in 2014 by the No Orphan Left Behind Foundation (NOLBF). This center was established as part of NOLBF's Operation Schools of Hope in Haiti, created in response to God’s call to care for orphans. Located in Cerca-la-Source, Haiti, the center's mission is to provide free, Christ-centered education to orphans and vulnerable children from kindergarten through high school.
